In our present day society, dating is a very common social activity among people of both the sexes and of different age groups. In such an activity, a pair of persons or a group of people may engage in such an activity. The purpose of getting involved in such an activity is to enable each other to assess whether they can set up a private and personal relationship between themselves which may ultimately lead them to live as a married couple.

Traditionally, these dates were arranged by a third party who might be a member of the family, a friend or a professional matchmaker. In the olden days, parents encouraged the couples after getting engaged to go for date so that they could know each other better. This concept is what is presently known as regular dating. This kind of dating is quite popular even now. This is done not only to know each other better but to find whether they are well matched or likeminded.

People who are going for regular date wear good clothes and try to make themselves good looking and attractive. They generally go to place either to have snacks or dinner or to watch a movie together. But a person has to spend quite an amount of time and money to attend such a date. A person may also go out dating with number of persons to enable one to choose one’s most desirable partner.

With the increase in the popularity of internet, concept of online dating has started in modern times. It may be considered to be an example how a system has been developed to organize dating between people. In this system, single persons, couples or group of people make contact among themselves using internet whether a relationship, romantic or otherwise, may be developed between them.

There are number of sites on the internet that provide such online dating service. To get the benefit of such a service, one has to register in one of these sites giving personal details including hobbies, interest, likes and dislikes. Photo of a person is also uploaded in many of these sites.

To select a partner, one could search a site entering different critical factors the person feels important for such selection. These may be like age range, education, location, areas of interest etc. But, this service may be available to only those persons who are registered with the site.

For some sites, registration may be free, others may charge some monthly charges. Some sites may restrict their membership on basis of religion, language, location etc. Because of the development of newer technologies, these sites may provide provision of web casts, online chatting or using message boards.

Besides the practice of regular dating and online dating, there is the practice of speed dating which is also getting popular. This practice was initially started by one sect of the Jewish community in United States in 1998.In this system of dating, a group of people meet together at some public place like a public gardens or community hall for several hours.

In such dating, each person sits with another member for a fixed period of time to enable them to know each other better.

After this period is over, they move and sit with another person and the process is repeated with a view to select a suitable partner for oneself.

Another type of dating is called blind dating. In this kind of dating, the persons do not know each other personally. They might have met together in an online dating service. By going through such a date and meeting each other physically, they may decide whether they like to continue their relation farther.
